According to Military Protocal, it should be Officer Commanding, as there is only one Commanding Officer aboard ship, that being you Captain.

actualy the correct term would be "officer of the watch" *watches sea patrol and loves the navy*

Concidering that in some respect - Federation starships go by the "USS" as do american Naval ships, and they also follow most of the same kind of terms that the Navy's use. So they are more like Navy ships than you can first imagine!

Another thing to note is that in the millitary, when officers are of the same rank, those who have had the rank longer have seniority. And if you and someone else have the same rank you call them by their last name rather then their rank. So a Lt. cmdr would call me "Mr. Shepard" And i would call them "Mr.(Miss) Doe"
that really has nothing to do with shifts, i just that it would be a helpful note lol

Notably - Millitary rules show that if someone holds a senior position compared to another person of the same rank - the person holding the senior position has seniority
