New players must read this basic outline of the game before undertaking any Mafia game on this site. Experienced players are recommended to glance over the following to remind themselves of the rules and to refer back to it if any uncertainty of the Rules may arise.
Anyone who has any suggestions for this Reference sheet may post their ideas below and I will edit it accordingly. Please tell me if I have missed something. With it being such a vast game I undoubtedly have.
Simply Syndicated Mafia Academy
Everyone who wants to participate in a Mafia Game first has to play an Academy game to grasp the basics.
Note: Having past experience of Mafia outside these forums does not qualify you to play experienced games.
Receiving your role
Before the game starts you will receive a Private message with your Role (See below). You must reply to this message confirming that you have received your ole and you understand it.
Note: if you don’t reply to the message within 72 hours then the moderator is entitled to find a replacement for you anyway. If you do send a confirmation message then you are expected to play and must post fairly regularly. If you don’t then the game cannot progress.
Opening Narrative and end of Phase Narratives
During Mafia the Moderator will write narratives that explain what has happened during the phases. Please read these stories because they contain vital information that may be needed for the game or to talk about during the day phases.
Outline of the Game
Basic Mafia consists of two teams (although experienced may have more), the Mafia and the Townies. The Mafia are the bad guys and the Townies are the good guys.
The goal of the Mafia is to take over the town by killing the townies. They win if there are more Mafia than Townies.
The goal of the Townies is to wipe out the Mafia and win if they are all killed.
The game takes place during two phases; the Day phase and the Night phase.
Day phase
During the day phase all the Players talk to one another and try to work out who the Mafia are amongst then. The Mafia talk as well trying to disguise themselves as innocent and confusing the Townies. The day phase lasts for one week or when a majority vote has been reached (See below), or three days after the first vote has been cast.
Posting
Mafia is a text based Role Playing game. Posts must be text only. Pictures are unnecessary to the progress of the game and only act as a hindrance. Smilies are also not recommended.
Voting
During the day phase players can vote for another player who they feel is most likely to be Mafia. The person who gains a majority vote or who has the most votes at the end of the phase is lynched. Players do not have to vote and they may vote for no one.
Votes have to be in bold or they will not be counted. For Example Vote: Twiddly.
Once a majority vote has been reached the day phase is over. No one may change their votes after the majority has been reached even if the Moderator has not seen it.
Twilight
Twilight is the transition phase between the two phases. During this time players may still speak but they may not cast any more votes.
Night phase
The Moderator will let the players know that Night has begun. During this time any players who have Night Actions (See below) must contact the Moderator as soon as possible with their choices. The night phase lasts 72 hours and once this time is over the moderator may start the day phase and any actions that have not been received by that time are void. Players may not post during the night phase.
Death
When you are dead you are not allowed to post. You may not speak with other players about the game. Mafia is a team game so even if you are dead you will be victorious if your team is. Upon death the moderator will reveal your role to the rest of the players.
Basic Roles
There are a vast number of Roles in the game of Mafia (only the most basic of which are explained here).
Townies: (Pro Town) They have no special powers. They talk and vote during the Day Phase but must stay quiet during the Night Phase.
Mafia Goon: (Pro Mafia) They know who their fellow Mafia are and may talk with them during the night phase. Each night they come to a decision on someone who they are going to kill
Cop: (Pro Town) The Cop may investigate one Player each night if they choose.
Doctor: (Pro Town) During the night Phase the Doctor may protect one person if they choose. This person cannot be killed by a night action that Night Phase. The Doctor may protect themselves.
Godfather: (Pro Mafia) The Godfather is the head of the Mafia family. He leads the discussions during the night and reports them back to the Moderator. In some games the Godfather may have special powers if the Moderator wishes but they must make sure they make this clear when they assign the role. The Godfather may be immune to night kills, may always show up innocent when investigated and if killed will end the game with a Town victory.
Role Blocker: (Pro Town) During the Night Phase they have the power to Block one player. If the chosen player has any night actions then the Moderator does not count them.
Vigilante: (Pro Town) During the Night Phase the Vigilante may choose to kill one player if they wish.
Role Claiming
You are allowed to reveal your role at any point during a mafia game. However, sometimes the Moderator may specify that Role Claiming will not be allowed during that particular game.
Rules to remember
1. Do not talk outside the game
2. If the game permits you to reveal your role you are not allowed to use the private message that the moderator sent you
3. Do not edit or delete your posts under any circumstances
4. All votes must be in bold. Any votes that are not in bold will not be counted
5. Do not post after death under any circumstances
6. Do not talk during the Night Phase
7. Do not Role Claim if the Moderator has not allowed it
The last thing to say is that Mafia is only a game. It really isn’t about winning, but about having fun. It really is not worth getting upset over and should not be taken too seriously. Just make sure you enjoy yourselves.
Its a lot more simple than it seems you just need to get going with it.
